Information Overload: Are we over-informed?
April 30, 2015 0 0

The hardest part about being an individual and thinking for ourselves is learning what is true and what is not completely true. We are inundated with information from media outlets and 24-hour news channels. Though we (Erik and Ginny) believe in informing ourselves, we wonder if too much information clouds...

We are inundated with information from media outlets and 24-hour news channels. Though we (Erik and Ginny) believe in informing ourselves, we wonder if too much information clouds our ability to sort the facts and be decisive. We found numerous studies laid out in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s book “The Black Swan” that show we can sometimes be confused by being given too much information. In one of the studies two groups are shown the same pixelated picture. The picture...

It is another day and another political question for the 2016 presidential election.  Today’s question is almost pointless.  Will Hillary Clinton seek the Democratic Party Nomination for the 2016 Presidential Election?  With the hashtag #ReadyForHillary already populating the interwebs, and a very nice website www.ReadyForHillary.com you would think it’s a foregone conclusion that Hillary will be the first Presidential Spouse to run for President.  There would be several other firsts here.   She would be the 1st woman to run for President of the...

I've never been good at poker. One year when I was little, my brother got a poker set for Christmas. It had one of those super cool spinning chip holders, a few decks of cards and even a nice, big piece of green felt that you could set out on the table to make it just like the real deal.  I was never good at beating my brother in card games, but I had to try this one.  After all, a game with so many brightly colored pieces couldn't be that hard, right?  Wrong.  After losing for what felt like the...

This weekend sparked the beginning of a deluge of campaign talks concerning the Presidential elections for 2016. A score of possible contenders met in Iowa for the Iowa Freedom Summit, Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush took off for a meeting in Utah, and Marco Rubio hosted a two day summit at the Delano Hotel in Miami comprised of his top contributors and support team. When asked of intentions to run, each of these perspective candidates has declined to answer, but the momentum is there and this weekend proves it. Teams are gathering, networking is beginning, and the...

Dr. Ben Carson is a Christian. Don’t vote for him because you, too, are a Christian. If you are black, don’t vote for him because he, too, is black. The same goes for Hillary Clinton, if she decides to run, don’t vote for her because you are also a woman. To do so is ignorant. Don’t be offended by that statement. We agree with people in many areas of life simply because we are similar to them, picking groceries or restaurants or whatever. Picking a president is not a decision to be taken so lightly. Our right to...

This weekend ABC News is preparing to show a 40 minute documentary ad paid for and developed by Dr. Ben Carson, titled A Breath of Fresh Air: A New Prescription for America. The docu/ad introduces Dr. Carson to the country and will announce his intention to run for the Republican candidacy in the upcoming 2016 Presidential Election and will air in 22 states and Washington, D.C. Many people find it slow and difficult to gather information about an election and its candidates, and with the current political situation of our country it would behoove all of us...

I often live with a dichotomy...

I often live with a dichotomy of social responsibility and simple family life.  I want to put my head in the sand, focus on the simplest parts of life, and stay blissfully ignorant to the issues taunting and plaguing our world.  Sometimes, if I spend too much time paying attention to things happening around me I can feel overwhelmed.  There's need everywhere I look, even inside my own home. I want to be the answer to all of it, but I also want to close my eyes to it and pretend it's not there.  When I learned I...

During the 2012 Presidential Election the mail at my house was inundated with campaign fliers advertising just how despicable their opponent was.  Each was stacked neatly in a pile and moved into the recycle bin, never opened.  The one great advantage to not subscribing to any live television services is the ability to avoid the deluge of smear campaign commercials.

I'm tired of hearing all the bad stuff.  Telling me over and over again what the opponent does wrong, doesn't tell me what you are doing right.  If you want to win my vote then tell...

What would happen if a politician...

What would happen if a politician did not have one negative ad toward any other candidates?  Would you vote for that person? Smear campaigns suck, and they do not add a thing to democracy, the democratic process, or life in general. You may think they provide a useful service in showing the people what a candidate has done wrong, but you are being deceived.  All these ads are biased, pick and choose from evidence, and ignore the context in which decisions were made or data was collected. If you want to convince people about another candidate’s wrongdoing,...
